IBAN checker
Paste an IBAN: the checker verifies its length and check digits, tells you whether it is a QR-IBAN (the variant reserved for QR bill payments with a QR reference) and, for a Swiss or Liechtenstein account, shows the bank, its town and its BIC from the bank master data published by SIX.
The result will appear here.

How to read a Swiss IBAN
| Position | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | CH | Country code (CH or LI). |
| 3-4 | 93 | Check digits, calculated over everything else. |
| 5-9 | 00762 | Institution identification (IID), formerly the clearing number. Between 30000 and 31999: QR-IID. |
| 10-21 | 011623852957 | Account number, padded with leading zeros. |
The internal account number format differs from one bank to another: only your bank can produce the exact IBAN of an account. An IBAN rebuilt by hand can have correct check digits and still point to an account that does not exist.
Before paying a supplier: the IBAN that changes
The most common fraud on supplier invoices does not forge the whole invoice: it replaces the IBAN, in an email announcing a "change of bank". A technically valid IBAN can therefore be fraudulent.
- Compare the IBAN with the one used for previous payments to this supplier.
- Verify any change by calling the number you already know, not the one in the message.
- Be wary of a foreign bank for a Swiss supplier, or of a change announced just before a due date.
In Dossivio Capture, every invoice received is compared with the supplier's known IBAN; a change blocks payment preparation until an authorised person signs off.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does the checker tell me who owns the account?
No. No public tool reveals the holder of an account. The checker shows the bank and verifies that the IBAN is consistent, not the identity of the holder.
What is the clearing number?
It is the former name of the institution identification (IID), digits 5 to 9 of a Swiss IBAN. SIX assigns it to each bank and publishes it in its bank master data.
Can a QR-IBAN receive an ordinary transfer?
No. It is reserved for QR bill payments that carry a QR reference. For a transfer without a reference, use the ordinary IBAN of the same account.
Are foreign IBANs checked?
Yes for the check digits and, in 36 European countries, for the length. The bank name is shown only for Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
